Bluesky is a real-time source: the firehose delivers posts as they are made. Most other sources are polled: discatch checks the API at the catch interval. Real-time sources batch to one push per minute per catch, regardless of the interval. For tight-interval catches during a launch, real-time sources deliver faster than polled sources.
The Jetstream firehose is the only source in discatch’s set that requires no authentication, has no API quota, and costs nothing on the provider side. The cost of a Bluesky catch is compute and the unit price, not API credits. This is why Bluesky will be the cheapest real-time source discatch offers.
Developer communities have been moving from X to Bluesky since 2024. The AT Protocol is open, the firehose is free, and the community skews technical.
